Albertsons LLC (formerly Albertson's) was once the nation's second-largest grocery chain. In 2006, however, the chains' premier stores were sold off to a consortium of buyers including CVS and Supervalu, which has now become the third-largest grocery chain in the country. Albertsons has been left with just 340 supermarket stores and 115 fuel centers in 10 states.
Unfortunately, Albertson's offers almost no Fair Trade items which are essential for a socially responsible food company. Farmers across the globe remain in poverty as supermarkets compete for low prices, but purchasing Fair Trade commodities means better wages and, eventually, standard of living for producers.
